Roll Call
Students at Castleford are starting to record data and research material that they will present at the school wide science fair on March 1st. March 1st is the last day of the second semester and we felt that this activity would be a good way for students, staff and the community to celebrate the learning associated with science.
The Castleford School Trustees have voted to run a supplemental levy in May in the amount of $300,000.00. This is the same dollar amount of the previous two levy’s supported by the Castleford community so the patrons should not see an increase in taxes to support the school district. The trustees have scheduled the first two public meeting for February 7th and 8th at 7:00 pm. The levy will allow for facility upkeep and maintenance, providing textbooks and technology for students, and to maintain staffing positions that are no longer fully funded by the State of Idaho. The trustees would invite all patrons to the public meetings so they can further explain the funding needs of the district and the plans of how these supplemental levy dollars will be used for the next two year.
The Castleford School District received word last week that our plan of how to spend the technology dollars this year was approved. The district plans to expand the use of our Idaho Education Network (IEN) classroom so that we can originate classes as well as receive courses. The trustees also voted to submit our intent to be amongst the first 1/3 of the schools to receive the technology for high school students beginning in the fall of 2013. In the mean time we have a committee of eight staff and trustees who are exploring the use and integration of i-pod touch technology into classroom learning.

Roll Call
The school day has changed at Castleford to have a start time of 8:10 am. However, students who weekly maintain a “C” or better in every class have a delayed start at 8:35. The school work day begins for all staff at 7:50 am, and teachers are in their classrooms every day at 8:10 to help all student regardless of their current grade. We would remind parents that you have 24 hour access to your child’s grades via the school grade book, Power School. If you need help accessing this website contact Stacy Kinyon in the school office, or check out the school web at castlefordschools.com .
A change that was made this year is to implement a Pay for Performance plan for teachers and administrators which includes the need to have input from parents. A input form is available on the school web site page, or you can call the school and we will mail you a form. Additionally, we made the change to base fifty percent of our evaluations on student achievement.
We are working to change the culture of our school to be healthy and active. The physical education department is working to recieve a $4000 grant from Fuel Up To Play 60 to help with this change.
So of the changes being made thus far are a smoothie blender in the cafeteria so that students can now have smoothies for breakfast. The junior high girls physical education class is going to try to change the atmosphere of our cafeteria by posting signs to promote healthy eating and physical activity and possibly have monthy themes. A recent survey went out concerning the salad bar and the lunch menu. Students were allowed to express what they would like to see offered in our lunch program.
If the grant gets approved, we are hoping to purchase exercise balls for the elementary classrooms to replace chairs. All teachers in the school recieved activity break ideas to use in the classroom between lessons, before tests, or when the student seem restless. These breaks take about 3-5 minutes and help get the students active and better able to re-focus on the lessons being taught in the classroom. Also, a high school leadership team has developed a monthly calendar to be sent out for the month of February with ideas of activities to do at home with the family every day of the week.
